Yelp Is Now Inside ChatGPT: What It Means for Local Businesses

Nathaniel Kober · · 8 min read

ChatGPT now shows Yelp reviews, ratings and photos in its local answers, and diners can book a table or join a waitlist without leaving the chat. Here's what Yelp and OpenAI actually announced, what's still unclear, and what local businesses should do about it.

When someone asks ChatGPT where to eat tonight or who to call about a leaky roof, the answer increasingly comes with Yelp's stars attached. Over the summer of 2026, Yelp and OpenAI announced two connected deals: Yelp's reviews, ratings, photos and business details now appear inside ChatGPT's local answers, and diners at many restaurants can book a table or join a waitlist through Yelp without leaving the chat.

The short answer: if your business has a Yelp page, that page is now one of the sources ChatGPT reads, and quotes, when it recommends local businesses. For restaurants on Yelp's reservation system, ChatGPT can also turn a recommendation into a booking. The practical response is not to buy anything. It's to claim and complete your free Yelp page, respond to reviews, and follow Yelp's rules, which are stricter than Google's on one important point.

What Yelp and OpenAI have announced (as of October 2026)
Date What changed What's still unclear
July 23, 2026 Yelp licensed its reviews, ratings, photos and business information to OpenAI. ChatGPT can show them in local answers, with Yelp branding and links. The deal isn't exclusive. Financial terms weren't disclosed, and OpenAI controls how Yelp content is presented.
July 23, 2026 Yelp said its Request a Quote feature, which lets people contact local service providers, would come to ChatGPT soon. No launch date was given.
August 10, 2026 Yelp Reservations and Waitlist arrived in ChatGPT for thousands of restaurants in the U.S. and Canada that use Yelp Guest Manager. Changes to a booking are made on Yelp. Neither company has said what booking data passes between them.

How it works for your customers

A person asks ChatGPT something like "where should we get dinner in Bethlehem tonight?" ChatGPT searches for an answer, and Yelp's reviews, star ratings and photos can now appear in what it shows back, labeled as Yelp content. If a recommended restaurant takes reservations through Yelp, ChatGPT can show open times, and the person can book or join the waitlist through a Yelp form inside the chat.

Yelp isn't the only booking partner. OpenAI's help center says reservation availability in ChatGPT can come from OpenTable, Resy or Yelp, depending on the restaurant. Yelp bookings work in the U.S. and Canada. OpenAI says reservation search is available on eligible consumer plans but not on its Business, Enterprise or Edu plans, and not in voice conversations.

For service businesses such as plumbers, roofers and landscapers, Yelp says quote requests are coming to ChatGPT too. When that arrives, a customer could describe a job in ChatGPT and send it to a business through Yelp.

A booking made in ChatGPT lands in the restaurant's reservation system like any other.

Why ChatGPT wants Yelp

Local recommendations have been a weak spot for AI assistants. They can describe how a water heater works, but they have trouble knowing which plumber in Easton picks up the phone. Review platforms have exactly what the assistants lack: millions of first-hand accounts, photos, hours and addresses, kept current by customers and owners.

There's also a trust problem. Research by Morning Consult that Yelp published this year found that 65% of Americans have used AI search, but only 15% trust it "a lot," and 72% say AI tools should always show where their information comes from. An answer that says "4.5 stars from 212 Yelp reviews" borrows credibility from a source people already recognize. Star ratings are a shared language built by millions of customers over many years, which we explore in why a 4.7 beats a 5.0. ChatGPT is now speaking that language.

For Yelp, the deal puts its content in front of people who may never open the Yelp app. Yelp's CEO has framed licensing as worthwhile when it serves consumers and strengthens Yelp's brand, though Yelp is cautious after its history with Google, whose local search practices Yelp is now challenging in court.

What local businesses should do

  1. Claim and complete your Yelp page. Claiming is free. Fill in your categories, hours, holiday hours, services, service area, photos and the "From the business" description. If ChatGPT pulls your Yelp details into an answer, they need to be right.
  2. Respond to reviews, publicly and calmly. A thoughtful reply shows readers, and now AI answers, that a real person is paying attention. Keep replies short, specific and free of arguments.
  3. Restaurants: don't switch systems just for this. If you already use Yelp Guest Manager, your bookings may already appear in ChatGPT. If you use OpenTable or Resy, ChatGPT supports those too. Choose a reservation system for how it runs your floor, not for one AI channel.
  4. Service businesses: get ready for quote requests. Turn on Yelp messaging, set up notifications and answer fast. When quote requests arrive through ChatGPT, the business that replies first often wins the job.
  5. Keep your details identical everywhere. ChatGPT doesn't only read Yelp. It also searches the wider web through partners such as Microsoft, so your Google Business Profile, Bing and Apple listings, website and Yelp page should all say the same thing. Our guide to showing up in AI answers covers the rest of that work, including the crawler settings that can lock you out.
  6. Don't buy Yelp ads expecting ChatGPT placement. Neither company has said that Yelp advertising affects what ChatGPT shows, and OpenAI says its own ads in ChatGPT don't influence answers. Yelp ads may still make sense on Yelp itself. Judge them on that.

A few cautions

Some of the numbers are Yelp's own. Yelp's announcement says businesses on Yelp are more likely to appear in AI answers, citing a third-party analysis that found Yelp leads home services citations by 3.4 times over its nearest competitor. It also describes its restaurant network as the largest in the U.S. based on Comscore data. Those may be accurate, but they come from a company promoting its own product.

The deal isn't exclusive. Yelp can license the same content to other AI companies, and it already supplies data to Apple Maps, Bing and others. ChatGPT, for its part, still reads other review sites, other search results and your own website.

OpenAI controls the presentation. How much of your Yelp page appears, and when, is up to OpenAI's design, which can change at any time.

The takeaway is the same one that runs through all of local search: there's no single switch to flip. Keep your listings accurate everywhere, earn real reviews and answer them, and the AI tools have something good to say about you. For why visibility tends to favor the big players, and where local businesses still win, see who gets seen online? For the federal side of review rules, see who regulates your website?

Our digital marketing team also keeps Google, Apple and Bing listings accurate and consistent, so every source an AI assistant reads tells the same story.

Frequently asked questions

Does ChatGPT use Yelp reviews?

Yes. Under a licensing deal announced July 23, 2026, ChatGPT can show Yelp reviews, ratings, photos and business details in its local answers, with Yelp branding and links.

Can people book restaurants through Yelp in ChatGPT?

Yes, at restaurants that use Yelp's reservation and waitlist system, in the U.S. and Canada. ChatGPT can also show availability from OpenTable and Resy, depending on the restaurant.

Do I have to pay Yelp to appear in ChatGPT?

Neither company has said that. Claiming a Yelp page is free, and nothing in the announcements says Yelp advertising affects ChatGPT's answers.

Should I ask customers to review me on Yelp?

No. Yelp asks businesses not to request reviews, and its software filters reviews that appear to have been solicited. That differs from Google, which allows asking every customer.

Is Request a Quote available in ChatGPT yet?

Yelp announced in July 2026 that it was coming soon, without a date. Check Yelp's business blog for the current status.
